What is FLAM?

FLAM stands for Français Langue Maternelle — a global initiative recognized by the French government that supports French-speaking children living outside of France. With over 150 associations worldwide, FLAM programs help young people develop advanced French fluency during their time abroad.

At DMUM, we also welcome non-native families with an interest in the French language and culture.

French Learning with Purpose & Joy

At DMUM, we offer more than French language classes. Our programs help children grow up French while living abroad through immersive instruction, creative projects, and a strong sense of belonging. Whether your family is new to the region, reconnecting with your roots, or simply passionate about French, DMUM offers a welcoming space where the language is not just learned, but lived.

The 4 Pillars of Learning at DMUM

Our programs are built on four foundational pillars that shape our teaching approach. Each pillar reflects a core element of our mission — to help children not just learn French, but live it. From immersive classes to cultural expression, our goal is to support students in using the language confidently at home, in school, and in the world.

Weekly French Classes

Our weekly French classes, held in a dedicated community space in Stavanger, are taught in full immersion by native-speaking educators. To ensure a personalized learning experience, groups are limited to 10 students and organized by age and language proficiency.

  • Students aged 3 to 18 gradually build their oral and written French skills while discovering francophone culture. These dynamic classes aim to strengthen both linguistic identity and self-confidence.

  • We also offer support for CNED programs and other forms of independent learning, along with personalized educational guidance to ensure progress suited to each student’s profile.

  • For young children aged 2 to 6, our “Éveil” workshops are held two Saturday mornings per month, offering playful sessions focused on songs, stories, and creative language activities. No prior knowledge of French is required.

Projects That Inspire Expression

Smiling teen girls connect in a cozy living room during a DMUM gathering

DMUM students don’t just study French — they use it to tell stories and express who they are. Through creative, collaborative projects, our programs bring language into the real world in meaningful ways:

  • Journalism and podcasting workshops
  • Cultural exchanges with schools in France
  • Video and media production
  • Letter writing, storytelling, and creative writing

For 2025–2026, our core project is Diver’Cité — a year-long exploration of identity, culture, and expression. Students create documentaries, slam poetry, and multimedia stories that reflect the diversity of our community and celebrate their voice.

Sociocultural Activities & Events

Throughout the year, we host a wide variety of cultural activities — From theatre to science workshops and Francophonie celebrations.

  • Encourage oral expression
  • Foster friendships
  • Celebrate diversity in all its forms

Whether it’s a film-pizza-debate night for teens or a hands-on arts workshop for younger children, these gatherings help strengthen our shared connection to French beyond the classroom.

Francophone Library

Children read French books joyfully on the library floor

With more than 1,500 French-language books and magazines for young readers, our library is open to all members for borrowing.

It’s more than a reading room — it’s a place where children build vocabulary, discover new stories, and stay connected to the French language at home. We also provide curated resource lists by age and level to support learning beyond the classroom.
